President Samia Lauds Tanzanian Professor Who Received Prestigious Harvard Award

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has lauded Professor Karim Manji, a distinguished scientist in the field of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). Professor Manji recently received the prestigious Alumni Award of Merit from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a recognition that underscores his exceptional contributions to public health, particularly in Tanzania.

President Samia wrote on her X page: “We are proud of your dedication to our country, your research, advice, service, and your mentorship of hundreds of students who are now doctors in this critical area of health for our nation,” as she expressed immense pride in Professor Manji’s dedication to the nation, his revolutionary research, mentorship, and commitment to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Professor Manji’s journey to the award has been marked by decades of unwavering service to his country. Since 1992, the Alumni Award of Merit has been bestowed upon Harvard Chan School’s most distinguished alumni for their outstanding contributions to public health. While the majority of recipients hail from the United States, Professor Manji’s recognition is a testament to his exceptional achievements and the global impact of his work.

Throughout his career, Professor Manji has spearheaded various research projects that have had a profound influence on healthcare policies and practices. His groundbreaking research on the use of oral Nevirapine among breastfeeding infants of HIV-positive mothers, conducted as part of the HPTN-046 multicenter study, has significantly shaped global guidelines. Additionally, his investigations into the role of Lower Dose Zinc in treating Childhood Diarrhea have contributed to the development of new treatment protocols.
