Meet The Winner Of Dr Mwelecele Malecela Memorial Award

Dr Anange Fred Lwilla, an epidemiologist at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) has won the Dr Mwelecele Malecela Memorial Award named after one of world’s respected researchers on Neglected Tropical Diseases who died in February 2022.

Dr Lwilla, who holds a Masters of Science in Epidemiology, Research and Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, bagged the award, alongside other five senior scientists but her award recognizes early career researchers in health aged 40 years or below.

At the time of the award, Dr Lwilla has less than 10 years in health research and, according to NIMR, she has worked on at least three scientific papers, meeting the criteria for being published in peer reviewed journals.

She is currently working at the Epidemiology and operations research unit of NIMR in Mbeya, where she is a study coordinator of the multi-center phase III double blind randomized active-controlled vaccine trail taking place at Mbeya Zonal Refferral Hopsital.

As a researcher, she coordinates the implementation research project under the TIFA where NIMR-Mbeya collaborates with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Program and several other studies.
