Konga Leaves NHIF As Director General, Tenure Ends

Bernard Konga, an economist, who steered the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) through turbulent times, has handed over the office, as Director General.

His departure comes at a critical time when NHIF is navigating challenges in expanding coverage of health insurance, often marked by tensions between the fund and private health facilities.

Konga, who was appointed to the position seven years ago  has been replaced by Grace Temba, the former Director of Finance at NHIF, who now takes over as Acting Director General.

The handover ceremony, which took place at the Ministry of Health headquarters, was graced by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. John Jingu.

Dr. Jingu urged the incoming leader, Temba to ensure the effective implementation of the country’s landmark universal health insurance law.

Temba brings a wealth of experience to the position, with over eight years in internal auditing and a strong financial background. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and holds a Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA). Temba also has a Master’s degree in Finance and prior banking experience.

Since October 2022, Temba has served as the Director of Finance at NHIF. She is also an audit committee member of the Law Reform Commission of Tanzania. Last month, she was elected as the Treasurer and board member of the Institute of Internal Auditors in Tanzania.
